Beijing Gongti Richina Underwater World, also called Blue Zoo Beijing, which was the first 5-star saltwater aquarium to be built in the capital city of China. It locates entirely underground beneath the lake of Beijing Worker’s Stadium, and covers 7,800 square metres of floor space.
Blue Zoo Beijing is the leading role of the aquatic technology, which owns the acrylic underwater tunnel 120metres in length, the longest in Asia. The tunnel is carefully designed to maximize the visitor’s exposure to all facts of marine life and activity in the main tank.
The main tank of Blue Zoo Beijing holds 4.5 million litres of manufactured saltwater, gathering 2,000 fish in 200 species from all over the world. In the exhibition hall there are 20 different display tanks containing both fresh water and salt water marine life.
Blue Zoo Beijing provides the Sharks’ Show regularly, 20 sharks each above 2 metres in length swimming around the diver for food, and it also offers another enjoyable Mermaid Show, beautiful mermaid performers swimming freely with sharks and tortoises, both are eyesight feasts for visitors.
Varied Sharks and Rays are specific display species in Blue Zoo Beijing. It contains 11 Zebra Sharks (Stegostoma fasciatum), which is a highlight for visitors. Zebra Sharks are found in coastal waters throughout the tropical Indo-West Pacific. they are oviparous, laying eggs outside of the body. They feed mainly on small fish, crustaceans and molluscs and mostly at night. This fairly docile species grows to at least 2.4m in length, and possibly up to 3.5m. Juveniles less than 70cm in length are brown with narrow yellow to white bars and blotches (this is why they are called a Zebra Shark). These markings change as the animal grows into an adult and the bars are replaced with a covering of dark brown spots on a background of yellow-brown. Only the adults have the characteristic spotted pattern. The Zebra Shark has large pectoral fins, two close-set, dorsal fins and a very long caudal fin that lacks a ventral lobe. It is a slow-moving species that has 5 gill slits and strong ridges running lengthwise along the upper side.Zebra Sharks are rarely seen, and these may prefer to live in deeper waters.
The fiercest specie of sharks in Blue Zoo Beijing is Sand Tiger Shark (Carcharias taurus), also is called the ragged tooth shark. They are common found in tropical and subtropical regions. Their large teeth are arranged in three rows on each side of the upper and lower jaw midline. But only the front rows of the upper and lower jaws are used for catching food. The next rows of teeth are ready for taking the place of the missing ones in the front rows.
Blue Zoo Beijing Themes: Education, Entertainment and Environment. As a sciences base of the National Youth, it not only provides visitors close-up views of the miraculous underwater world, it also offers marine culture center, teaching children, teenagers about marine creatures, marine biology and the marine environment.
